Santa Maria Trastevere

This church is famous for its mosaics by Pietto Caravillini but it also has earlier works. The first official Christian place of worship in Rome, became the focus for the devotion of the Virgin Mary. On the outside is an amazing mosaic of glass and original frescoes which have faded over time.

The 22 granite columns seen above in the place were taken from the ruins of ancient roman buildings. The mosaic in the front shows Mary feeding the baby Jesus with other women surrounding her. The main mosaic inside the church is located at the apse and it is simply astounding!

This shows the coronation of the virgin in which Mary sits on Christ's right side surrounded by saints. The ceiling of this place is also unimagionable, the gold bordering is astounding.

  • One of the oldest churches in Rome, Italy, perhaps the first in which mass was openly celebrated.
